HOUSTON – Two men are dead late Thursday night after one of them, Houston police say, led them on a chase in a stolen car and crashed into another driver on the city’s southwest side, killing them, and then turned the gun on himself.
Police say it happened in the 7500 block of W. Bellfort Avenue. Initial details are an unidentified suspect in a stolen vehicle fled from officers after a traffic stop just before 8 p.m., leading to a chase.
A helicopter followed the vehicle from the air, which allowed other officers to hold back a bit, HPD said.
However, during the chase, the suspect crashed into another vehicle, which was making a U-turn. The impact of that crash, authorities said, caused the driver to be thrown from his vehicle; he died from his injuries.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s vehicle then hit a light pole, which caught fire.

HPD said firefighters were able to put out the fire and ran to try to pull the suspect out of the car. At that point, however, investigators said the suspect pulled out a gun from his waistband and shot himself. He died at the scene.
Officials have only described the suspect as a man in his 20s, while the crash victim, also a man, appeared to be in his mid-40s. They also say the resulting chase and fatal crash happened very quickly, with the entire thing happening within two minutes.
An investigation into the chase and deadly crash remains underway, and KPRC 2 will continue to track this story and make updates when more information becomes available.
